Together, they bring more than 35 years of combined experience to restoration, architectural masonry, carving and bespoke stonework.
From significant historic buildings to individual private commissions, every project receives the same careful, considered approach.
Our Story
Mat and Louis first met while working on a restoration project at the Palace of Westminster. Their complementary skills and shared approach to craftsmanship quickly developed into a successful working partnership.
Following a series of intricate relief carvings for a prestigious project in Knightsbridge, with another carving package approaching at the Houses of Parliament, they decided to formalise their collaboration and Established Stone was created.
Their first project under the new company saw them overseeing the masonry work at St Stephen’s Hall, including surveying, detailing, hand carving and restoring a range of important historic features.
Today, Established Stone undertakes restoration, conservation, architectural stonemasonry and bespoke commissions for historic, listed and modern properties.
Whether conserving an important historic feature or creating something completely new, we bring precision, skill and respect for the natural material to every project.
Our Founders

Mathew Millen
Mathew is a highly skilled and accredited stonemason with over 25 years of professional experience in architectural carving, stone restoration, and heritage conservation. Holding NVQ Level 3 and Heritage Skills Accreditation Level B, he has worked on some of the UK’s most iconic and historic buildings, including Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, St Pauls Cathedral and the House of Commons. Renowned for his craftsmanship and attention to detail, Mathew has earned accolades such as a bronze medal at the CITB Skillbuild competition which resulted in participation in The World Skills Selection Programme for the Skills Olympics and commendations from the Monarchy for his exceptional contributions to heritage projects.
Louis Clark
Louis is a highly experienced and accomplished stonemason specialising in heritage restoration, carving, and conservation. With an NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Heritage Skills, he has contributed to prominent projects such as the Palace of Westminster, Chichester Cathedral, Old Royal Naval College and The Royal Pavilion Brighton. Renowned for his precision, problem-solving skills, and dedication, Louis has played a key role in award-winning restoration projects, including the 2018 National Stone Award. Proficient in setting out, fixing, and bespoke carving, he consistently produces exceptional work across a wide range of masonry tasks.
Our Workshop
After visiting the site to take measurements and understand the project, much of our specialist work takes place in our well-equipped workshop in the South Downs.
Here, we cut, shape, carve and finish natural stone for restoration, architectural and bespoke projects before installing the completed stonework on site where required.
The workshop allows us to combine traditional hand skills with the space and equipment needed to produce precise, carefully finished work.

We believe successful stonemasonry begins with understanding the building, the material and the purpose of the work.
Whether we are conserving original masonry, recreating a lost architectural detail or producing a completely new commission, our approach is always informed by the character of the stone and its setting.
